Improvement of Emergency Operating Guidelines

Emergency operating guidelines provide technical guidance for the development of plant specific emergency operating procedures. These guidelines provide the actions necessary for mitigation of plant events that necessitate a reactor trip and initiated in Mode 3 or 4.

We know that EOG is closely related to safety of plant through Fukushima accident. We are performing researches for enhancing the plant safety by upgrading EOG. Innovative nuclear plant is under development in Korea. Thus well-matched EOG must be developed in consideration of new passive safety equipment use. We are developing a new EOG for hybrid safety injection tanks and passive emergency core cooling systems.

Automation of Safety Function file

A human operator of a nuclear power plant must handle a large number of dynamic information sources and reach a decision to achieve a system goal efficiently and safely. Automation is one of the best ways which reduce human operator’s workload in main control room. The automation must be implemented in a balanced manner with manual safety actions for achieving minimum risk. The effect of application of automation should be estimated by proper probabilistic safety assessment of which method is currently under development in this study.

Monitoring Method Development for Safety Component on Standby State file

Most of the components of which successful operation on demand is a crucial factor of safety are in standby mode. Generally it is very difficult to detect the failure of standby components since their operation cannot be observed. Periodic testing is currently the only mean to cope with this uncertainty. In this study, a concept of a monitoring method for standby safety components is proposed in order to raise its availability. Basically, availability of a standby component can be improved by monitoring some detectable random failures and avoiding possible aging caused by actual operation tests.
